The Event:
In August 2016 historic floods wreaked havoc on parts of south Louisiana. A slow-moving system dumped over 20 inches of rain over a three-day span in parts of Ascension, East Baton Rouge. Livingston and neighboring parishes. The event was declared as the worst natural disaster in the USA at that time since Hurricane Sandy of 2012 and the worst in Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina.
The Impact:
Twelve parishes in Louisiana—Acadia, Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberia, Lafayette, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, St. Landry, Tangipahoa, and Vermillion—were declared major federal disaster areas. Reports by the Associated Press indicated that more than at least 40,000 homes were damaged. The event was declared as a major disaster. The hardest hit parishes were East Baton Rouge and Livingston.
Our Approach:
Cypress Solutions LLC was proud to work with EMCS, a local company that was awarded a contract by FEMA to haul and install over 100 mobile home units (MHUs) in EBR, Livingston and Ascension parishes. Each unit had to be delivered to the property, stabilized, ramps or stairs had to be built, water and sewerage lines tapped, electricity connected and then the units had to be cleaned staged and inspected for safety. These mobile home units were placed on FEMA sites (or on homeowner property) to provide temporary housing for those whose homes were destroyed or majorly damaged by the flood. Cypress provided project management, administrative support in invoicing, accounting and inventory as well as oversight of the sub-contracting process. Our support helped EMCS complete the project timely and efficiently as well as receive a favorable CPAR for the mission.
